Eco warrior
I’ve always been interested in ways to cut down on waste and be a bit more connected to the environment and nature. When I fell pregnant, I became aware of the potential for huge amounts of waste, especially as a new mum, because everyone was sending me lists of stuff that you ‘have’ to get. Instead, I looked into the basics and started with things like nappies, as there’s a crazy amount that are used and sent to landfill every day. Over time, and the older my kids got, I started to look at other ways to eliminate plastics and excess waste from all areas of our lives including food, packaging, toiletries, toys and clothes – it’s been a journey.
Becoming a mum has definitely made me more aware of the planet. You have a huge responsibility for the children you bring into the world, but also for the planet as you’re bringing these people up into it. You want your children to treat the Earth with respect and to be good citizens, so it involves their footprint on the world, as well. As a parent, you’re no longer a single entity.
If parents want to start bringing up their children in a more ethical way, I would recommend starting with nappies because it can make such a big difference. By using eco nappies, you get into that habit of using reusable items and washing them, rather than having to always buy new. The volume and behavioural change that it encourages in people is massive. Once you’ve got the hang of that, then I’d also recommend leaning towards whatever it is you are interested in. If you’re passionate about food, explore ways of making package-free food recipes and snacks, or if you love toiletries, try making your own.
