F atherhood is the focus of these two century-straddling works from Nanni Moretti, the second of which garnered him the 2001 Palme d’Or at Cannes. Aprile, the lighter and more autobiographical of the pair, sees him in comparatively whimsical mood as the birth of a son coincides with political upheavals and turbulence in his native Italy. The Son’s Room, in contrast, is a deeply emotional heart-wrencher about a grieving father grappling with his boy’s senseless death. Newly restored for Blu-ray release, they make highly collectable additions to StudioCanal’s Vintage World Cinema series.
