Stack Overflow’s 2024 Developer Survey has yielded interesting results S when it comes to the most popular operating system. The survey asked which OS respondents used. Ostensibly, 59.2% of developers polled used Windows for personal reasons and 47.6% for professional use.
However, while Windows is aggregated into one category, Linux isn’t. The figures for Linux users are broken down into specific distros.
When combined, these percentages show that developers use Linux more often. The total percentages for users of all listed Linux systems (Ubuntu, Debian, Arch, Red Hat, Fedora, WSL and ‘other Linux’) come to 78.1% for personal use and 74.1% for professional use.
This clearly outstrips Microsoft. However, the figures may be skewed by the fact that while WSL is a Linux development environment, it runs within Window. Respondents may also have indicated they used more than one OS.
