Luxair took delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX 8, LX-LBL (c/n 64607), in June 2023
Securing a position as launch customer of a new aircraft type is a coveted prize for airlines. For Luxair, serving as the European launch customer of the smallest Boeing 737 MAX variant – the -7 – was an opportunity to raise the profile of its operation beyond the landlocked nation. However, with the uncertainty surrounding the MAX, coupled with significant and pre-existing delays to the programme and the -7’s entry into service, the prospect of a delivery flight still appears a long way off.
Luxair and Boeing announced a contract for four of the smallest models of the MAX at the Paris Air Show in 2023. At the time the deal was signed, Luxair CEO Gilles Feith said: “We continue to invest in Luxair’s growth and this agreement for four Boeing 737-7 is an extra step towards securing a long term future for our national airline. This type of aircraft is a perfect match for Luxair and will meet the requirements of the market. Seating 160 passengers, the 737-7 will offer flexibility across the Luxair network while significantly reducing fuel consumption. This will help us get even closer to our commitment to sustainable flights, while demonstrating once again our support to the promise of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”
