The Bible is the best-selling book of all time, according to the Guinness World Records, and it’s packed full of tales, some rather fantastic and others actually quite historical. While it has been through many revisions and translations, there is much historically we can take from it. Some stories, such as hell being named after a rubbish pit, refer to important archaeological sites — in this case Gehenna, a location believed to be in Jerusalem. Others, such as that of a literal scapegoat, explain how phrases that are commonly used in modern times came into existence. Here are just a few of the more bizarre biblical stories you can find.
