Any shelter, no matter the location, needs to cover some basic needs: It needs to protect you from the heat, cold, sun, precipitation and pests; offer a place to set down belongings; provide a dry place to sleep; and give some sense of security. Fancier shelters meant for long-term use might even provide heat and cooking capabilities, bathing and toileting areas, space to cultivate a garden and room to expand.
