A VITAL part of an auctioneer’s job is research. And many become adept at finding out about local history. Coming up in the Peter Wilson auction on March 16 is a good example. It might be chipped and cracked, but the old pub jug pictured here – c.1860 – sheds a little more light on the history of Haslington, a Cheshire village between Crewe and Sandbach.
Its significance lies in its inscription, M Latham, Fox Inn, Haslington, which could tempt local bids when it is offered by the Nantwich saleroom, estimated at £30-50.
The jug’s appearance had Peter Wilson ceramics specialist Chris Large asking residents for assistance. Alan Casey, who runs the website haslington.org, said the 1836-51 Tithe map for Haslington shows what is now the Fox pub was originally a house with gardens and outbuildings. The land was owned by John Latham and the house was occupied by Matthew Latham.
