Words Tim Heap
I was 25 when I joined the RAF, working as an administrator to ensure that the paperwork is all correct so that my squadron is ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. It’s vital that we have a record of where people are at all times, especially in emergency situations. My work makes sure that people know what they need to do and are safe while doing it.
After university and before joining up, I spent a few years looking for a job that felt right. I’ve been a parttime admin assistant where I helped organise art exhibitions and charity fund-raisers, but it was only a oneyear contract. Then I was a baker in a supermarket but didn’t like the monotonous routine and lack of scope for progression, and I volunteered for a sexual health organisation. I loved the job but it was unpaid.
