Our homework for the day was to get our parents to write down what they expected from us when we grew up, who and what they wanted us to be, which was to be sealed and left unopened until the teacher read them out in class. My mum loved being involved with stuff, and jumped at the chance of writing down exactly what she expected from me. The teacher began reading them out; someone’s mum wanted their daughter to be an artist, someone’s dad wanted them to be a solicitor, someone’s parents wanted grandkids, I’m sure there was one who said they just wanted their kid to tidy their room!
