RANJ: This is a tricky one! Political alliances don’t usually provoke such full-on reactions, but of late it seems that things are really getting to people — on all sides.
Most of us have subjects that we feel passionately about, but we need to understand that not everyone will share our views. That’s the whole point of living in a democracy. This is what your friend needs to understand.
His opinions and feelings are no more important than yours, and both of you have a right to express them freely and in a civilised way.
It’s unlikely that you’re going to be able to change his political views, so I wouldn’t bother trying. However, you could talk to him about how he deals with it and how it’s making you feel. Perhaps approach the subject in a general way the next time you guys are in a relaxed environment and he is in a good mood.
