A lifeline
Natalie Morgan explains the importance of giving blood
Do you need to get in your good deed for the day? How does saving the lives of six children, or three adults sound? Okay, so you may not be a superhero, but you can pretty much be the next best thing by donating blood. Yep, by volunteering some of your time to give blood at your local drop-in clinic, you really could save multiple lives.
According to the NHS (nhs.uk), in the UK alone, 1.6 million units of blood are needed each year to meet the needs of patients and to do this, we need 200,000 new donors annually. In 2017 and 2018, the recorded number of new donors in the UK only reached 150,103, and many believe that this is because people do not realise the importance of giving blood or just how little effort it really takes. Seriously, it really is effortless, and you are even offered a few biscuits and cuppa after each visit.
