THERE’S A STRONG perception in the fancy that
globalisation has brought mixed blessings when
it comes to seed supplies. The key issue is quality
control, specifically the lack of agreed nutritional
tests. David Alderton has argued that, in this
respect, the cage-bird exhibition fancy lags far behind its
animal equivalents. However, this looks set to change.
For some time, the eminent avian vet scientist Prof John
Cooper has been working in association with Haith’s to
develop simple quality-control techniques for elements of
diet, which could be standardised throughout our industry.
Now the scope has broadened, as the same parties join
the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland to develop a
database of scientifically tested seed nutrition (see News,
page 2). The first truly scientific avian seed diets, optimised
for each species,
will be the result.
