Welcome to the latest Checkpoint issue where we look at big data and how its depiction in videogames can give us an insight to its real-world use.

Of course Watch Dogs features heavily in this issue as it’s a perfect demonstration of the impact big data could have - and in some cases already does - on our every day lives.

In the last 20 years there has been an exponential rise in the use of social media and online services; banking, shopping, government services to name a few, meaning we leave a digital trail otherwise known as a digital footprint. That footprint contains information that helps build a picture about you. This makes it a lot easier for companies to target you for advertising as an example.
