A s I write this, it’s Friday afternoon and earlier this morning I (and the rest of the CCB team for that matter) responded to radio DJ and prolific
classic car enthusiast Chris Evans’ rally cry for a National Classic Car Day.
The timing of this event (namely its close proximity to the FBHVC’s
established annual Drive It Day) has already been discussed by our
editor in chief Peter Simpson in a previous column and I’ve nothing
really to add – any publicity for our hobby is good publicity and, just
like Peter, I can’t see enthusiasts choosing not to participate in one event simply as they’ve already taken part in another. Plus, it’s all for a good cause, namely Children In Need. Anyway, back to this morning; the Triumph Toledo tends to be regularly exercised anyway but rather than opting to travel in the modern VW Polo (the daily driver) I was joined by my fiancée and on the way into work we picked up a couple of her colleagues from the bus stop and dropped them off at their work. Features writer Jack and editor at large JJ did similar and besides all agreeing that it was nice to spend a morning sharing the experience of owning older cars with people who wouldn’t otherwise by exposed
to such occurrences, we were pleased to note just how many other people took part – there were certainly plenty of classics around Peterborough. I’d wager that the level of participation was boosted by
insurance specialists such as Carole Nash revising its member’s polices – some 270,000 in all – for one day only to provide 24 hours of commuting coverage, which ensured that enthusiasts didn’t fall foul of the law.
We’re going to include a report of sorts looking at both what we did and what others around the country got up to to in next week’s issue when we’ll also hopefully be able to given an indication of how much money was raised. Until then, I can say that the early signs are that the inaugural National Classic Car Day does seem to have done very well.
