DANZA&DANZA International  |  May/June
Damien Jalet is perhaps one of dance’s most multi-faceted creators: his practice encompasses drama, film, unusual site-specific choreographies and projects for major companies. He is now set to premiere his latest work “Mirage”, jointly created with the Japanese sculptor Kohei Nawa, at the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève. We met him at rehearsals, to find out what inspired this work and how his collaboration with Nawa came about.
Once again, Wayne McGregor surprised everyone with his choice for the Silver Lion award. Still relatively unknown in Italy, Carolina Bianchi (Brazilian but based in Brussels) is an impactful and ruthlessly uncompromising artist. Her work is a mashup of performance arts, visual arts and literature; we simply had to meet her.
Turning to classical ballet, in this issue we get to know to Francesco Mura, the Italian Premier danseur at the Paris Opera Ballet. We also look at a remarkable piece of contemporary dance that has stimulated much discussion in recent months: “Crocodile”, by the duo Harriague-Leriche. It’s a searing duet about love that developed after an almost chance encounter between the two dancer-choreographers, who both created and dance in it together.
We review several premieres from Italian stages, while internationally we have reviews of Marcos Morau’s new work for the Royal Ballet of Flanders, the Novi Sad Ballet (Morelli and Galili), Les Ballets de MOnte-Carlo (Balanchine/Ratmansky/Goecke) and the English National Ballet, which is dancing a full evening of Forsythe.
Ever wondered about patronage in dance? We explore it, looking at the concrete steps taken by Fedora, the cultural joint venture which supports both ballet and opera. As theatres prepare to close for the summer, the spotlight turns to festivals: we reveal our must-see picks.
