Why doctors need better training about nutrition
The latest scientific research into the human microbiome (the collection of microorganisms inside our bodies) has taught us that what and how we eat is crucial for our health. But are frontline doctors ready to adopt a more nutritioncentred approach? The answer, sadly, may be no. Most medical schools in the UK still relegate the topic of nutrition to a few hours of teaching within the curriculum – certainly not enough to ensure that future medics can advise future patients on better nutritional choices. Many in the profession consider nutrition advice the exclusive role of dieticians. The consequences are far-reaching, including a culture of overmedicalisation of patients – by which I mean treating the symptoms with drugs, rather than working on prevention and trying to improve a patient’s lifestyle.
