Incorporating my hobby and career
I tried going freelance but found it wasn’t the right career path for me – I didn’t enjoy the uncertain income, so a job in full-time employment would be a better option for me. I love photography and want to incorporate it with another career, so what are my options here? George Hanford
There are many professions out there that incorporate photography yet require other skills, George. Most businesses need photography, whether that’s for branding or social media, so you can really stretch your net when it comes to thinking about what it is you might want to do. Not knowing where your strengths lie, here are just a few suggestions to get you thinking.
• Photography journalist. If you enjoy writing, a career in the publishing industry could be an excellent option.
• Forensic photographer. If documenting the details at the scene of a crime appeals to you, this could be your calling.
• The armed forces. There are photography positions available in the RAF, Navy and Army, which is good for those who enjoy adventure and travel.
• Teaching photography. If you’re a sociable person who likes to impart wisdom on others, teaching photography could be a good career option.
Finally, check out our interview with Wendy McDonnell, digital communications officer at the Yorkshire Dales National Park, who has managed to combine her career with a photography hobby.
There are many different careers that would allow you to pursue your hobby, from forensic photography to teaching the subject to others
