Five years ago, if you had told me my sapphic romcom, Sorry, Bro, would be released on the same day as another sapphic romcom (Behind The Scenes, by the lovely Karelia Stetz-Waters) I would have laughed in your face. Me? A published author? Forget it. But the fact that there were two queer female romances traditionally published on the very same day, that there are loads of lists like “10 sapphic books releasing in January”, shows we exist in an entirely new world. After years of being cast aside, publishing is now ripe with female/female fruit.
I remember a time when I was so starved of sapphic content, that when I saw a love story between two women onscreen, I made that movie my entire personality. The film was Mulholland Drive, created by the man who gets his own adjective, David Lynch. The plot is surrealist and twisted, unclear what’s an illusion and what isn’t, utterly terrifying at points, and the type of story where just as you feel you might understand what is happening, Lynch unveils another, stranger curtain.
