Quincentennial greetings from the planet Quinnis, where Quizzing is a way of life and nothing is more sacred than the number 500. When I asked Queen Quetzal of Quinnis to suggest a quiz topic for this landmark issue of DWM, she grandly declared that I should command you to identify all 500 inhabitants of the planet Karfel. When I told her that that was the daftest idea I’d heard since the Quarks applied for membership of the Quawncing Grig, she had a bit of a strop and condemned me to a quintillion years’ hard labour mining Quarb Crystals on Qualactin Six. Luckily, what with me being an ethereal transdimensional wraith and all that, I was able to dematerialise in a swirl of Quantel.
Instead, here’s my own Quincentenary Quiz. Peering out from these pages you will see precisely 500 eyes. Most of them come in pairs – but as you know, not every life-form in the cosmos is of the binocular persuasion, so you’ll also find a smattering of ones, threes, fours, and even a six. There are 500 eyes in total. Trust me, I’ve been number-crunching away at this like a latter-day Logopolitan.
You’ve already guessed the rules: for each picture, I want you to identify the character and the Doctor Who story. Four things to bear in mind: (i) Some stories have more than one picture; (ii) I’ve thrown in a handful of non-TV wild cards, so you’ll have to think about other media; (iii) For a maximum two points each time, remember that we want the story title as well as the character, and be as specific as possible – sometimes the character might just be ‘a Judoon’ or ‘a Zarbi’, but on most occasions, even if it’s a monster, you should be able to identify a specific individual and the exact story it comes from; (iv) There’s no Zarbi and no Judoon. Those were just examples.
