For the first time since the 2008 episode Exit Wounds, the original cast of Torchwood is back together. Written by Guy Adams, the three-part epic Believe sees them investigate the Church of the Outsiders, a strange cult looking to a future in space.
“Having that entire cast in for three hours’ worth of a story, you want to make sure that you give each of them moments to shine,” says Guy. “So I did look, from a story point of view, at creating elements that suited those characters and only those characters. Hopefully Captain Jack is at his most egotistical and messianic! Having never written for Owen and Tosh before, I was very interested in playing with their extremely dysfunctional relationship. I’ve been lucky enough to write for Gwen several times, usually with a horror narrative, so this time I was able to really tap into her energy and heart. And Owen’s arrogance was exciting. My default position would be to use that for comedy, but I was quite determined from the word go that, as far as this story was concerned, his arrogance would be something much darker and more troubling than that…”
