The ‘Base Under Siege’ Story

The Tenth Planet (1966) marked the end of one Doctor Who era and the beginning of another – and not just because, right at the last, the Doctor (William Hartnell) was reborn in the body of a younger man (Patrick Troughton). Because this fi rst Cybermen story was so popular they all-but-remade it a few months later, as The Moonbase (1967) – setting the template for many of the next few years’ adventures, too…

In The Tenth Planet, the TARDIS lands at the South Pole, beside the Isolated Outpost of Snowcap Base; in The Moonbase, beside a base on the Moon (unsurprisingly). All Human Life is Here – since a relatively diverse cross-section of humankind is present at said outpost. In Snowcap, we meet the Italian Private Tito, the Englishman Barclay and the American General Cutler, whereas the moonbase’s crew includes the Frenchman Benoit and Nils, a Dane.
