Early on in the sixth episode, Mighty Kublai Khan, Ian . nally admits to Marco the truth: that he and Barbara are… English. Marco agrees that they’ve come a long way, but the Crusaders were in the Holy Land 25 years earlier. His dates are a bit out: the so-called ‘Lord Edward’s crusade’, commanded by the future Edward I, landed in 1271 and departed the following year. (As scripted, however, Marco told Ian: “The Crusaders were in Accra less than 25 years ago.”)
