The Myth Makers (1965), on which Nigel worked as a design assistant, coincided with the arrival of John Wiles as Doctor Who’s producer - a change that reportedly unsettled the show’s leading man, William Hartnell. In addition, Hartnell’s Aunt Bessie died during production - but he wasn’t able to attend her funeral, since it clashed with one episode’s recording. These factors might help explain an extraordinary incident described by Nigel…
“William Hartnell had really started trying to push his in. uence on it and got a bit too cocky. He used to go across to the pub opposite Riverside Studios in full costume at lunchtimes. On one particular occasion, Hartnell stormed in, in full dress, pushed his way to the bar and said, ‘I’d like a so-and-so…!’ Now, this person who had been waiting for ages to get served - he turned round to Hartnell and actually thumped him in front of all the crew, and gave him a black eye! So there was suddenly a great rush from all the make-up artists, taking him back to the studios to try and cover up this black eye just before they went on to rehearse and record the episode, as everyone was due on set at two o’clock.
