In February, an episode of the Sunday evening favourite Call the Midwife caused something of a stir among Doctor Who fans.
It’s May 1964, and Sister Monica Joan (Judy Parfitt) is engrossed in The Warriors of Death, the second episode of The Aztecs. “It’s so exciting,” she says. “The Doctor’s assistant has just been mistaken for an ancient high priestess who seeks to exploit her influence to outlaw human sacrifice.” Sister Monica is to be applauded for her concise summation of the plot, and it was certainly a surprise to see a vintage Doctor Who broadcast inspiring an amusing exchange. But the script for this episode (by Amy Roberts and Loren McLaughlan) also raises a perplexing question.
