CAUTION: DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN SCREAM (2022)
TO QUOTE THE name of a recent documentary, you cannot kill David Arquette. But you can, sadly, kill Dewey Riley, the loveable, bumbling, pure-hearted police officer whom Arquette has portrayed, winningly, across 25 years and all five films in the Scream franchise, from Scream to, erm, Scream. Arquette had developed the moustachioed mope, who was a minor character earmarked for death first time out, into one of the series’ three ever-present pillars, along with Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott and Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers. The latter, in particular, formed half of a sweet and often surprising on-off relationship with Dewey which echoed the real-life marriage and divorce of Arquette and Cox.
