MY HOME CHILDREN, FOUND
A TOP-NOTCH TANGENT
This month sees Gill Shaw in hot pursuit of her 3x great-aunt Sophia’s sons, John and Christian, and crossing the Atlantic once again in search of the story
Gill Shaw
10-year-old J De Neef (seventh from the top) sailed to Quebec in 1896.
At ScotlandsPeople, I bump into a record that stops me in my tracks. I’m looking for any last mentions of my 2x great-grandmother Emma Susannah Riboldi, née Welch, and her second husband John de Neef. Far as I know, they had no children together before Emma died in Glasgow in February 1882. I was idly wondering how long John had stayed in Scotland after her death, so I widened the date range a little.
Whoa! What’s this?
The birth registration of a boy named John Welch de Neef. Really?! For a split second I’m confused and think he must be Emma and John’s child, but then I see the date, 1885. So no, he can’t be, but there’s surely some connection, isn’t there?
I fritter away six credits to view the image and well, well. Young John Welch de Neef was born on 23 November 1885 at Watt Street, Kinning Park, Glasgow. His father is John de Neef, a ship store manager, and his mother is Sophia de Neef, née Welch.
