You left Brazil as an 18-year-old to sign for Italian giants Milan. What was it like to join such a massive club so young?
It was a little strange, as I knew from the beginning that I’d be going out on loan. In those days, Serie A clubs could only register a maximum of three foreign players. They already had Ruud Gullit, Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard – not a bad trio! Italy’s league was the best in the world back then, so it was incredible for me just to train with players like Franco Baresi, Paolo Maldini and the Dutch players before I got my move. It was a dream come true for a youngster.
