The male fertility clock is ticking, too
Women are used to being told their age might impact on fertility, but it’s newer for men – and just as important, says a new report. The research found men’s fertility drops from about age 35, and this can have negative efects on the health of their partners and babies. Pregnant women were found to be at higher risk of gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia and premature birth when the father of their baby was over 45. Babies were found to be at higher risk of low birth weight and birth defects, and more likely to be diagnosed with psychiatric disorders and childhood cancer as they grew up. These efects were not mitigated by men having a younger partner. The main takeaway is men need to know their fertility limits and consider banking sperm before 35. Welcome to the club, guys.
