There’s plenty of research linking gardening with improved psychological wellbeing and physical health. Now a new study of allotment gardeners in London has found it helps us to have a more positive body image too. ‘Positive body image is beneficial because it helps to foster psychological and physical resilience, which contributes to overall wellbeing,’ says Viren Swami, Professor of Social Psychology at Anglia Ruskin University, in Cambridge.
The study focused on the effects of access to small patches of green space for urban dwellers, and concluded that creating more allotments in cities could help reduce the long-term cost burden on health services. But whether you’ve got an allotment or not, you can still benefit from visiting your nearest green space.
