Tens of thousands of American airmen from the Eighth Air Force were shot down over Occupied Europe or Germany in the Second World War. A significant minority of these became ‘evaders’, men who managed avoid immediate capture by the Germans and (at least attempt to) escape back to friendly territory. Most were assisted along the way, sometimes by Resistance groups, although these generally tried to remain separate from the dedicated escape lines.
