When the QWERTY keyboard layout was established in 1878, one thing was missing – the exclamation mark. And it stayed missing for almost a century. As late as 1973, The Secretary’sManual was still explaining how to make the mark on a manually by typing a full stop, hitting the backspace and typing an apostrophe that floated above the full stop.
