Welcome to the October issue of Home Farmer – sometimes referred to as our ‘crafty’ issue as we devote a number of pages to craft gift ideas. This year the projects featured include truffles (including custard cream, Malteser and finger of fudge truffles), traditional sweets, foods, a crocheted purse and original ideas for creating home-made fuzzy felt and reviving tired old table mats and coasters using funky wrapping paper, PVA glue and varnish. It’s always intended to inspire ideas for those additional fun gifts we can all make in our kitchens to add a little individual personality to our seasonal giving, but the fun is for the crafter too, not just the recipient, especially when it comes to taste-testing your some of your creations!

But all of this doesn’t come at the expense of more traditional Home Farmer fare, as we offer up a full range of features on veg growing, recipes, garden DIY and keeping smaller livestock, including apple trees, mustard, soil improvement, seasonal poultry, farmhouse recipes using cider and apples and a weekend garden DIY project to make a ladder stand to use the vertical space available on your plot, be it a garden, allotment, courtyard or balcony. We certainly all had fun putting it together and we hope you have at least as much fun putting it all to the test throughout September.
