THE ROUTE TO POWER
How energy is generated and transported to our neighbourhoods
1 BOILER
Coal is funnelled into large boilers, where it’s heated up to 1,700 degrees Celsius.
2 EMISSIONS
Harmful emissions, such as carbon dioxide, are vented from the power plant via tall chimneys called stacks.
3 STEAM
The heat generated from the combusted coal heats adjacent water into highly pressurised steam.
4 TURBINE
Steam moves through bladed turbines, causing them to spin at up to 3,600 revolutions per
5 GENERATOR
Attached to the turbine is an electromagnet, inside the copper wire coil of the generator.
