Weeding is probably not a funny matter but it is often a rewarding one. Seeing all those nutrient-sapping and water-sucking greens crowding around your precious veg, choking the life out of them, is depressing. On the other hand, a weeded bed, with surrounding soil looking loose, airy and uniformly black brings a real sense of satisfaction and a feeling that all is well with the world. Apparently, hoes have been found depicted on cave paintings dating back to 5000 years BC. Before the use of metal in the 14th century, hoes had heads made of stone or animal horns and were used for weeding and making furrows. Today, hoes are a much more sophisticated affair, with quite a range of different models available to purchase. Once the Dutch hoe was king, but not any more.
