What do you know about Iceland? Apart from the volcanoes, there isn’t much to the country... or is there?
Can you name any famous Icelanders? Well, there’s Björk, of course, the world’s most famous Icelander, and Iceland’s most unusual singer. But who else? Well, what about Leifur Eiríksson who discovered America in 1000 AD Vinland (the Land of Vines)? Then there’s Bobby Fisher, the American former World Chess Champion who was given Icelandic citizenship on 21st March 2005... but he doesn’t really count, does he? Of course, there are lots of famous Icelanders. Halldór Laxness, a novelist, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1955. Crime novelist Arnaldur Indriðason's works have met with success outside of Iceland. Actress Anita Briem starred in Journey tothe Centre of the Earth, was partly filmed in Iceland in 2008. There are a number of famous sports stars, including Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen, who has played for Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur, and Chelsea. And there’s Magnús Scheving, who is a writer, producer, entrepreneur and a famous athlete. He is also the creator and co-star of the successful children’s television show LazyTown.
