Henhaus for rotisserie chicken with Maris Piper fries
HOTOGRAPHS: HOLLY CANT, STREETFEAST/SCOTT GRUMMETT
THE GASTRONOMIC MAP of London has never really charted anywhere east of the Thames Barrier, but change is afoot with the opening of Public in Woolwich – a street-food venue inside the cavernous building that once housed the 1930s Plumstead Road Covered Market. It’s the latest venture from the Street Feast team, which runs similar temples to all things food and drink in four other locations across London, from Shoreditch to Canada Water. Billing itself as a ‘food stadium’, Public is more a place to bring a gaggle of friends than a first date, with punters settling on to long tables with spoils from the numerous street-food traders and bars. If you want to join them, don’t hang around too long: the whole site will be demolished in 2020 when the area comes under redevelopment.
