macOS quick-fire questions
Can macOS save disk space using auto compression?
System files have been doing this since OS X 10.6, but this feature hasn’t been well supported for users or developers. This changes in Big Sur with the arrival of AppleArchive, although that’s not intended for use for whole volumes.
Where can I see which apps have been updated?
The closest macOS comes is in System Information. Select the Installations item under Software (left), to show updates and software installations made using installers, including system software, and from the App Store. This doesn’t include apps which use their own updaters, or which have been moved to the Applications folder.
Checking in the cache
Q I’ve lost an old photo, which was on my previous Mac. I have its last Time Machine backup on a hard disk, but can’t find it there. Could I check the QuickLook Cache on that, perhaps?
