Model Engineer  |  4528
Welcome to Model Engineer Issue 4528
In this issue Dennis Stones continues his account of overcoming the problems posed by John Stevens’ Skeleton Clock, young Angus French (a Junior Silver Medal winner) adds Arduino controlled stepper motors to his small mill and Mike Haughton suggests an alternative to conventional sand cast iron castings.
We take a brief look at the London Model Engineering Show and Chris Gunn makes the safety valve for the Garrett 4CD.
On the cover we feature the subject of a new series constructing a two cylinder inverted vertical engine with a distinct ‘marine’ appearance. Chris Walter begins his description of the design and construction of Mariner.
Ahead of a forthcoming series on the building a 5 inch gauge locomotive, Terry Woodward writes about the history of the Colne Valley and Halstead Railway in the south of East Anglia, specifically the locomotives that worked this line up until its closure in 1965.
A quite remarkable piece of civil engineering is explained in Jeremy Buck’s article about his 5 inch gauge garden railway. Much more than a simple loop, the railway includes a very carefully constructed swing bridge that adheres to sound engineering principles and very much looks the part!
Finally, Inchanga studies the mechanics of steam within a cylinder and discusses the merits - or not - of compression.
