When St John’s Episcopal Chapel was in its earliest form in the mid-19th century, it was between a timber yard, fields and a tannery.
That early church on George Street was later enveloped into grander structures, as aspirations grew and the chapel developed into the cathedral we now see. It still has much to complete, but is a testimony to the visions, worship and care of generations.
However, St John’s is more than its stone. It is a living witness to the faith which continues to be nurtured and shared in a very different Oban from the one it first saw. In the midst of the busyness of local life and the itinerary of visitors, the building offers a quiet place of reflection, while the music of worship and concerts can lift the soul out of daily routines.
