‘A tragic drowning fatality occurred near Connel on Sunday afternoon when three young English holidaymakers lost their lives in a boating accident on Loch Etive. ‘The three men, C Lumlushley, of Bebington, Cheshire; Arthur Taylor, of Liverpool; and John Reynolds, of Bromborough, near Birkenhead, lost their lives when their 14-foot rowing boat upset in the strong currents of Loch Etive between Dunfuinary and Kilmaronaig. A fourth member of the party, Raymond Mellor, aged 26, also of Bromborough, was rescued after swimming around in the water for some time.
‘The men, who were spending a holiday at the Falls of Lora Hotel, Connel, set out on Sunday afternoon in a hired rowing boat. They had apparently been warned about the dangerous currents and rapids of the loch.
‘Finding the flood tide washing them quickly up the loch they decided to throw out the anchor, but as the hook caught in the bottom and the anchor rope snapped taut the sudden jerk seems to have pulled the bow of the boat under the water, swamping it and throwing the young men into the loch.
