The row over the closure of Royal Bank of Scotland branches continues to gather pace, with Highlands and Islands Labour MSP Rhoda Grant calling on Westminster to step in and stop the proposed closures, 13 of which are in the Highlands and Islands.
Mrs Grant has already called on RBS’s chief executive to revisit the decision, which includes plans to axe branches in Mallaig, Kyle and Barra.
She has rightly pointed out that we have the worst broadband in Scotland and therefore the ability to bank online is not a viable option for many people. The closure of the Barra branch is particularly difficult, given that it will mean a 20-mile drive and a ferry journey just to get to the bank. It also means a return visit will probably take someone the best part of a day, not to mention the added cost of fuel and ferry travel. The fact that we own the bank just adds to the anger and frustration.
