GLENFINNAN is one of nine Scottish railway stations in the top 100 in Britain, according to a new book.
Simon Jenkins, author and founder of the Railway Heritage Trust, profiles his favourite British stations in his new book ‘Britain’s 100 Best Railway Stations’ and earmarked Glenfinnan as one of the best in the country. Rating the stations on their architecture, ambience and historical significance, Jenkins travelled the length and breadth of the country to narrow down the list from 2,563 to 100 - with the Lochaber station making the cut.
First opened in 1901, Glenfinnan railway station is one of the most picturesque stations in the country, sitting on a hillside overlooking the small village and Loch Shiel. The station, on the Fort William to Mallaig line, is perhaps most famous for its association with the Jacobite steam train and the Glenfinnan viaduct, which have both become synonymous with the Harry Potter films and attract thousands of visitors every year.
