The future of Farleigh and District Swimming Club, believed to be the oldest river swimming club in the world, is hanging in the balance. The weir which creates the 100m stretch of swimmable water along the River Frome is collapsing, and the cost of repair is estimated at £10,000. If there is no weir, there is no club and a fundraising effort is now underway to safeguard this valuable community resource.
Rob Fryer Chair of the club explains: “Founded in 1932 this recreational river swimming club is perhaps unique. Considered by many as the home of wild swimming, we have always kept our membership cheap so as to enable everyone to come. Sadly the state of our weir now threatens the very existence of our club. It will cost £10,000 and we already have £6,000. So please help us raise the final £4,000 by donating via: wild-swimming.com/Farleigh”
