This Tamron prime lens for full-frame DSLRs matches the f/1.8 aperture rating of Canon’s RF 35mm for mirrorless cameras. It’s smaller and lighter than the f/1.4 competitors, although it’s still more than 50 per cent heavier than the Canon RF lens. As well as native mounting on DSLRs, you can use it EOS R-series bodies via an EF-EOS R mount adapter, but only from serial number 014146 or firmware 3.0 and, so far, only with EOS R and RP models.
The Tamron doesn’t claim any macro credentials but nevertheless focuses closer than most 35mm lenses, down to 0.2m instead of the more usual 0.3m. This enables a more generous 0.4x maximum magnification factor.
