Satellite tagging of turtles has not just revealed the movements of turtles, but has increasingly contributed to our knowledge about their lifestyles as well. However, when NOAA Fisheries researchers and colleagues placed satellite tags on 26 loggerhead sea turtles in the Mid-Atlantic Bight, as part of ongoing studies of loggerhead movements and behaviour, little could they have anticipated the results.
The Mid-Atlantic Bight, an area of the ocean lying off the east coast of the USA, extends from Cape Hatteras, North Carolina to southern Massachusetts. A little more than two months later, after the tagging has been carried out, Hurricane Irene passed through the area, with 18 of the tagged juvenile and adult turtles in its direct path. This enabled the researchers to track changes in the turtles’ behaviour coinciding with the hurricane, and the results showed that they reacted in various ways.
