DAYS before his inauguration, Donald Trump’s decision to move the ceremony indoors to the Capitol kicked off one of the most shameless scrambles for access that Washington DC – a city whose status obsession rivals that of Versailles in its pomp – has ever seen.
Trump’s biggest backers and donors felt, not unreasonably, that they didn’t hand over small fortunes to his campaign and inaugural fund to be relegated from prime seats in the Rotunda to a “viewing party” at the Capital One Arena. Inauguration week is therefore a continuation of the recent grisly orgy of vibe-shifting and ringkissing. The tech industry has led the way, making big donations to the inauguration fund and competing to show Trump their willingness to work with him.
