THE EV transition continues at a glacial pace, thanks to the government’s inability to spot an obvious problem approaching from miles away. Parts of the UK are starting to get the message that if electric vehicles are going to dominate, charging them has to be cheap and easy for everyone.
Last week Northern Ireland announced a trial into cross-pavement charging. The half-million people there without their own driveway can now fill in a simple form to apply for a “cross-pavement channel”, which will lower the average cost of a full charge by roughly 85 percent (the saving is down to the swingeing price difference between public chargers and domestic electricity rates).
