The Rise Of Tarkus
Fifty years ago, Emerson, Lake & Palmer pushed the boundaries of popular music with the release of Tarkus. Although now regarded as a classic, their second album was all but slated by the critics at the time. As the conceptual opus celebrates its half-century, Prog explores the story behind its creation and the rise of one of the movement’s greatest and most unique bands

IN MEMORY OF MALCOLM DOME
Malcolm Dome’s name will be familiar to many readers of Prog. A respected music journalist and broadcaster, he had also been a valued contributor since this magazine’s inception in 2009. Editor Jerry Ewing writes a heartfelt tribute to his longtime friend and colleague, who passed away suddenly in October 2021
The Art Of Rush
Over a period of 40 years, artist and illustrator Hugh Syme has been behind some of Rush’s most iconic artwork. As his coffee table book, Art Of Rush: Serving A Life Sentence , is updated and reprinted, Prog quizzes him about the Starman, reimagining his art for the recent reissues and his long-lasting friendship with Neil Peart
One Summer Dream
When the team behind Summer’s End announced that the festival would return in 2021, there was a rush to buy tickets and a genuine sense of relief. The live circuit was starting to go back to normal and we could see our favourite bands in-person once again. But as the UK emerged from lockdowns and the date edged closer, organisers Huw Lloyd-Jones and Stephen Lambe faced the challenges of running the modest-sized event against a backdrop of changing rules and regulations. Prog caught up with them at October’s event to find out how they did it
The Old-Fashioned Way
Following the roaring success of their recent box set, Who Do You Think We Are?, Canterbury kings Caravan are back with their first new album since 2013’s Paradise Filter. It’s None Of Your Business sees them returning to long-form songs with an updated studio line-up that captures their live sound. Prog catches up with Pye Hastings, Geoffrey Richardson and new boy Lee Pomeroy to find out more
Lifting Shadows
The stars have aligned for Haken vocalist Ross Jennings to try his hand at going solo, and his new record A Shadow Of My Future Self finds the Englishman at his most accessible yet. He tells Prog about its varied musical palate and finding the confidence to go it alone
Turning Grief To Medicine
Four years on from the Grammy-winning Emperor Of Sand, Mastodon have returned with their most progressive album yet. Guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer-singer Brann Dailor analyse Hushed And Grim – and the sad event that inspired it
Tales From The Scenic City
On the follow-up to last year’s Dreaming City, Glass Hammer revisit a fantasy world worthy of a sword and sorcery novel. Steve Babb, Fred Schendel and new vocalist Hannah Pryor invite Prog to explore the story behind the second part of their epic trilogy, Skallagrim – Into The Breach, and its soon-to-be-released companion book
Lightbulb Moment
The city of Berlin is the inspiration for Public Service Broadcasting’s fourth album, Bright Magic, which celebrates the art, industry and myths of Europe’s cultural hub. However, in order to fully immerse himself, frontman and founder member J Willgoose Esq had to move there – and before Brexit potentially shut the gates. Prog caught up with him to find out more
Digging Deeper
White Willow might have been on the quiet side recently, but its co-creator Jacob Holm-Lupo has been anything but. Hot on the heels of the latest releases by The Opium Cartel and Telepath, the musician has turned to his collection of vintage synths for current studio project Donner. Prog finds out more about his new album of sound sketches that have been inspired by Tangerine Dream, John Carpenter and Steely Dan
Structured Chaos
For their fourth album, 4, Brighton’s Diagonal took a leap of faith, going into the studio with a blank canvas. Luke Foster and Nicholas Whittaker talk to Prog about the creative freedom of starting with nothing and the inspiration they find in the tension between melody and improvisation
