Retro Cars  |  Retro Cars September 2013
It’s been a busy month at Retro Cars that’s for sure. Shows have been attended left and right and
we’ve all been out driving and snapping while the weather has been so good. I got along to the
Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Retro Show at Santa Pod. Dan Bevis got to Player’s Classic and Andrew Everett went along to Harewood House. Goodwood is an experience unlike almost any other and if you haven’t already made the journey to the south of England’s home of motorsport, then I can’t recommend it highly enough. As the name suggests it’s truly an all-encompassing festival for petrolheads of all ages. The cars doing the do on ‘the hill’ came from all ages, marques and styles of performance machinery and included some spectacularly famous cars. I was enthralled by Gerry Marshall’s old Firenza ‘Big Bertha’ especially after reading last month’s profi le of the larger than life racer. Modern machinery and stars of motorsport were wowing the public too, with current F1 drivers such as Lewis Hamilton and Romain Grosjean doing doughnuts in front of the tens of thousands of motorsport fans. It was petrolhead heaven and I can’t wait for next year already! It’s not all shows in this issue though; there are plenty of tasty features to get stuck into. I was lucky enough to fulfil a childhood dream and get behind the wheel of a 993 Porsche 911 Carrera for the Dream Drives feature and in spite of being caught in a summer storm; loved every moment of it. Dan Bevis delves into the long term labour of love one Volkswagen Beetle owner has gone through to create his ideal motor and gets to grips with a true underdog tale when he profiles Huxley Motorsport’s British Drift Championship Toyota Corolla. Paul Guinness gives us the lowdown on another motorsport legend, this month Win Percy is the subject. Paul also takes a look at the tuning potential of Lotus’ ‘90s revival model… the Elise.
