Much as I can’t get enough of generic fantasy settings in boardgames, particularly dungeon crawlers, I also really like games with a strong historical setting, enough to pique further interest in the period, even if they don’t cater for solo play (e.g Britannia, Capital (Warsaw) and Medieval Conspiracy). There are many games set in a particular place and time but it’s often a superficial design element. In this column I look at three high-quality games which I believe inform as well as entertain. They share a common mechanic; a score attack versus a named opponent who is relatively simple to play leaving you to focus on your own game. Preferably a range of difficulty is included. Solo opponents requiring booklets of flowcharts and complex automata will have to wait for a future feature.
Obsession is set amongst the Derbyshire gentry in the late 19th Century. Families compete over four seasons to develop their estates; purchasing and building extensions – rooms and outdoor sporting facilities – in which to host events for family and guests. The favours granted by event attendees will raise the family’s prestige, generate cash and introduce further contacts. Events must ideally be held once in each area in order to obtain its development value, but event level is limited by family prestige. Servants are essential to the smooth running of the household but require rest. The most valuable guests yielding the greatest favours require additional servants and won’t deign to visit a lower prestige house. Occasionally guests are cads or gossips with negative value. After each season, a courtship round is scored and the winner will be awarded points and graced with the visit of one of the eligible Fairchild heirs for the forthcoming season. The game includes an informative glossary providing full historical context.
